Derek is the Co-CEO of Ten Years’ Time, the UK’s first racial justice philanthropy advisory company. He is Chair Designate of The Tudor Trust and a Trustee of Thirty Percy Foundation, two independent grant-making charities. Derek helped to establish the Church Commissioners for England’s £100m Fund for Healing, Repair and Justice, the most significant act of acknowledgement and repair yet made by any UK institution that received funds through the enslavement of African people. Derek also supported the establishment of the Baobab Foundation, Phoenix Way Partnership, Resourcing Racial Justice and Film & TV Charity’s Reel Impact Fund. He has been an advisor to Lankelly Chase Foundation, DeepMind and Churchill Fellowship, among others. Previously, Derek directed portfolios for the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, Laureus Sport for Good and National Lottery Community Fund, distributing over £150m to good causes in 34 countries. A former Director of Learning at the Stephen Lawrence Trust and Trustee of Sir Lewis Hamilton’s Mission 44, he was a founding member of Future Foundations UK as well as podcast host of Just Cause, exploring the intersection of race, culture and philanthropy. Derek is a Spear’s 500 Top Recommended Philanthropy Advisor (2023 & 2024), a Knowledge Equity Fellow, Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship, Saïd Business School, University of Oxford (2020), and a Churchill Fellow (2014).
