Derek is a leading voice in justice-centred and reparative philanthropy. He is Chair of The Tudor Trust and former CEO of Ten Years’ Time, the UK’s first racial justice philanthropy advisory company. Derek was instrumental in establishing the Church Commissioners for England’s £100m Fund for Healing, Repair and Justice, the most significant act of acknowledgement and repair yet made by any UK institution that received funds through African chattel enslavement.

Derek also supported the establishment of the Baobab Foundation, the Phoenix Way Partnership, Resourcing Racial Justice, and the Film & TV Charity’s Reel Impact Fund. He has been an advisor to Lankelly Chase Foundation, DeepMind and Churchill Fellowship, among others. Previously, Derek directed portfolios for the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, Laureus Sport for Good and National Lottery Community Fund, distributing over £150m to good causes in 34 countries.

A former Director of Learning at the Stephen Lawrence Trust and Trustee of Sir Lewis Hamilton’s Mission 44 and the Thirty Percy Foundation, he was a founding member of Future Foundations UK and the host of the podcast Just Cause, exploring the intersection of race, culture and philanthropy.

Derek is a Spear’s 500 Recommended Philanthropy Advisor (2023, 2024, 2025), a Knowledge Equity Fellow at the Skoll Centre/Oxford Saïd Business School (2020), and a Churchill Fellow (2014).
